5 Things you need in a power outage Oct 18, 2021

Power outages can be very unpredictable. Have you ever been left in the dark after a sudden power outage for a long time? If you haven't, it's not a very pleasant experience. When all the lights go out, the last thing you want is to find yourself needing to get some emergency supplies you do not have. It can be very dangerous to search for places in the room when you can't see what's in there. You certainly can't control the circumstances, but you can make the situation a little more bearable. That's why it's so important to be prepared for a long-term power outage. If you have a big family, having more supplies is not a bad idea either. After all, a well-prepared home is a happy home. The best way to prepare for an extended power outage is to make a list of everything you need. In this article, we have made a list of five things you need in preparing for a long-term power outage.

1. Water

Water and food are the two most important things during a power outage. If the power outage messes with water systems, there is a good chance that taps won't work. Not to mention if the power outage was the result of a storm, flood, or other natural disasters. Tap water might not be safe to drink if it does run. It's never a bad idea to keep enough water stored for drinking, brushing teeth, cleaning up, and for pets in case of an emergency power outage. We recommend stocking up on cases of water from your local grocery store as a start. Stay aware that you might end up needing more.

2. Food that won't spoil

To survive a prolonged power outage, you should first eat food from the refrigerator, then from the freezer, and then from storage. What you should stock up are some non-perishable foods that do not require freezing, cooking, or refrigeration, and enough for each family member to survive at least one week without power. Cycle out once or twice a year, checking expiration dates, and make sure to include a can opener to consume the packed food. Some general food items to include on your power outage checklist are:

CerealGranola barsCrackers、Nuts and dried fruit、Bouillon cubes、Canned vegetables、Dried or canned meat、Instant coffee and tea、Powdered milk、Baby food

3. Flashlight + Batteries

The first thing that everyone wants to reach for after a power outage is definitely some form of light. Since candles may create unnecessary fire hazards, the better option is to use battery-powered flashlights. Make sure you store flashlights in every room. Everyone in your family should know their location and make sure they are easily accessible in the dark. Do not forget to store extra batteries too! You may consider buying batteries that last longer than usual to avoid needing to replace them because you do not want your flashlight to run out of power when you need it the most. NANFU Alkaline batteries, for sure, are great options since they are known for their leak-proof design and extra-long lifespan. Stock up some NANFU Alkaline batteries and store them in a set spot, as you never know when you'll need them.

Tips: Store batteries uninstalled and separate from the flashlight to prevent corrosion.

4. Portable radio

We have so many media options available when the power is on, but when the power is cut off, all your smart devices will eventually run out of power or the communication towers may be damaged or powered off. That's where a battery-powered portable emergency radio become your salvation. It will become a valuable resource and keep you up to date on emergency-related information like power outage restoration expectations, current events, warnings, along with other updates. Another advantage of its portability is that you can take it with you should you ever need to evacuate.

5.First aid kit

An essential piece of any survival kit is surely the first aid kit. You never know when an accident will happen when you're moving around in the dark. Store supplies to treat minor injuries is never a bad way to go, in case you run into something during the power outage and suffer a cut, scrape, or bruise. Here are some basic wound care items to include in a first-aid kit for an extended power outage:

Bandages、Antibiotics、Gauze pads、Disposable gloves、Thermometer、Pain relievers、Personal medications、Scissors、Tweezers、Instant cold compress

The key to any power outage is to stay calm and alert. Ration your food and water as you may not know how long the power outage may last. Keep up with the news regarding the power outage. Keep a flashlight handy for when it gets dark. Lastly, a first aid kit is essential for any home regardless of power outages or not.
